Speaking Skills 2 of 10

Speaking Skills
2 of 10
When you’re assigned a class presentation, think twice before dismissing it as an unimportant part of your education. Employers look for speaking skills in job applicants, who may have to give presentations to clients or represent their organization in the field. It’s never too soon to practice good eye contact and other public speaking techniques.
According to The Book of Lists, the fear of public speaking ranks number one in the minds of the majority people. Far above the fear of death and disease, comes the fear of standing in front of a crowd. Joel Wiener noted author and public speaker wants to help people overcome that fear.
“The biggest fear is public speaking, with 15 percent of American experiencing a dramatic fear of it,” said Dr. Michael Telch of the Laboratory for the Study of Anxiety Disorders (LSAD) in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. “People have had to turn down jobs, and certainly students have dropped classes because of it.”
Regardless of your occupation, your success depends a great deal upon your ability to communicate effectively! Whether you’re running a meeting, selling a product, making a presentation, motivating co-workers, or just communicating one-on-one with others, you’ll get far better results if you can speak persuasively, smoothly and intelligently.

Reading: 5 Tips for Success

Reading
5 Tips for Success
Reading and writing go hand in hand. The better you understand a text, the more like you are to successfully communicate your thoughts about it in writing. So it’s important to develop strong skills in both areas. With that in mind, here’s how to improve your reading comprehension.
Tips 1-2
Tip 1: Annotate
Be an active reader. Instead of passively reading a text, take notes about important story elements, key factual information and significant ideas in the text.

Tip 2: Note the Author’s Writing Style
Every author writes with a purpose, using deliberate methods to successfully relate specific information to the audience. When you’re reading, look for patterns in the author’s writing. For example, you may notice a repetition of key words, phrases or symbols—or the use of a distinct type of sentence structure. Authors employ these writing strategies to help readers comprehend a central argument or theme, so be sure to explore how these techniques create meaning.

Student Success Statement #56

Student Success Statement
“Discipline yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction.”
Margaret Thatcher
Reflection:
I think that this statement is trying to say that if we have discipline we know that we will get a certain consequence if we do the wrong thing. We need to do the right thing in order for us to become a better person.

Student Success Statement #55

Student Success Statement
“What you are will show in what you do.”
Thomas A. Edison

Reflection
I think that this statement is trying to say that people need to try and do a better job than they already do because that shows that they really do care. If someone actually tries to do a good job, then they can be sure that they will be doing the best and get the best score because they actually tried.

Student Success Statement #54

Student Success Statement
“If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do not say it.”
Marcus Aurelius
Roman Emperor from 161 AD to 180 AD
Reflection:
I think that this statement is trying to say that people need to be a lot more careful about what they do or say. Sometimes people say what they think, and that is good that they are being honest, but sometimes it is not the truth it is just their opinion and it is not something good to just blurt out. People also need to be careful about what they do because thing can come back and haunt someone.

Selecting Your Courses Part 2

Selecting Your Courses
Part 2
The following subjects and classes are standard fare for success in high school and beyond, whether you plan to attend a four-year or two-year College.

English (Language Arts)
Take English every year, transitional courses, such as American and English literature; help you improve your writing skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Math
You need algebra and geometry to succeed on college entrance exams and in college math classes—and in many careers. Take them early on. That way you’ll be able to enroll in advanced science and math in high school, and show colleges you’re ready for higher-level work.

Most colleges look for students who have taken three years of math in high school. The more competitive ones require or recommend four years. Each school has its own program, but some of the courses typically offered are:
Ø Algebra 1
Ø Algebra 2
Ø Geometry
Ø Trigonometry
Ø Calculus

Selecting Your Courses Part 1

Selecting Your Courses
Recommended Classes for College Success
Part 1
The academic rigor of your high school courses is an important factor in the college admission process. College admission officers see your high school course schedule as a blueprint of your education. They’re looking for a solid foundation of learning that you can build on in college.
To create that foundation, take at least five solid academic classes every semester. Start with the basic and then move on to advanced courses. Challenging yourself is part of what makes school fun; but you need to firm grasp of the fundamentals before going on to more advanced work.

Student Success Statement #45

Student Success Statement
“It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company.”
-Anon
Reflection:
I think that this statement is trying to say that it is better to be all by yourself than to be with a group of friends that will just make you choose the wrong. Sometimes it is good to be alone so that you can think for yourself for a while.

Student Success Statement #43

Student Success Statement
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
Helen Keller
Reflection:
I think that this statement by Helen Keller is trying to say that people that are with more people can do much more than people that are alone. For example, it is better to have more people helping than it just being one person. Sometimes people say that it is better to work alone but that is not always the best thing to do because with more people the work gets done much faster.

Student Success Statement #40

Student Success Statement
"The only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeed lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedeth all others is-- 'I will form good habits and become their slaves.' "
-Og Mandino

Reflection:
I think that this statement is trying to say that the only difference between people who have failed is of what they failed doing. If someone did the right thing and they  chose the right thing to do it is different than a person that chose the wrong and big time failed. Sometimes people fail doing the right thing but that isn't as bad as failing by doing the wrong thing, because if someone failed by doing the right thing then that means that they at least tried to do the right thing.

Student Success Statement #39

Student Success Statement
“Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man’s doing but my own. I am the force.”
-Elaine Maxwell

Reflection:
I think that this statement is trying to say that people decide their own choices and at the end it will only affect them. People choose to do what they want and will only do what is good for them. For example, if someone chooses to take drugs, at the end it will only affect them because it is their body not someone else’s. So do the right thing and you will not hurt yourself or anybody else.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
By: Sean Covey
For teens, life is not a playground, it’s a jungle. And, being the parent of a teenager isn't any walk in the park, either. In his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens, author Sean Covey attempts to provide “a compass to help teens and their parents navigate the problems they encounter daily.”
How will they deal with peer pressure? Motivation? Success or lack thereof? The life of a teenager is full of tough issues and life changing decisions. As a parent, you are responsible to help them learn the principals and ethics that will help them to reach their goals and live a successful life.
While it’s all well and good to tell kids how to live their lives, “teens watch what you do more than they listen to what you say,” Covey says. So practice what you preach. Your example can be very influential.
Covey himself has done well by following a parent’s example. His dad, Stephen Covey, wrote the book The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, which sold over 15 million copies. Sean’s a chip off the old block, and no slacker. His own book has rung in a more than respectable 2 million copies sold. Here are his seven habits, and some ideas for helping you teen understand and apply them:

  Student Success Statement
"Nothing is ever gained in doing what's wrong."
                         -Wilford Woodruff

                             Reflection:
I think that this statement is trying to say that people should choose the right in order to gain something good. People sometimes do the wrong thing and they never gain anything that is right. You need to do the right thing in order to gain something that is good.

...owns or has easy access to a computer with internet access and email.
You don’t have to be a computer expert to be successful in online learning--but you must have access to a personal computer with reliable Internet access, as well as a basic level of competency in using them. Owning a computer with Internet access from your home is deal but many students use the computer labs on campus or at their offices to complete their work.
…has basic computer skills and is willing and open to learning new ones
We said you don’t have to be a computer expert to be successful in online learning. However there are some basic technical skills you should have mastered prior to enrolling in an online course.

Student Success Statement
“It’s not WHERE you live but HOW you live that counts. It’s not WHERE you play the game but HOW you play the game that counts.”
-Mr. Haymore

Refection:
I think that this statement is trying to say that it doesn't matter where you are because wherever you may be you can make it be really good or you can make it seem really bad. For example, if you are living in a small house that is not that good looking, fix it. Paint the house and try to make it look nicer so that you can have a nice home even if it is really small. Also, of you are playing basketball in the streets act as if you have a crowd and try to imaging that you are playing in a nicer place like Madison Square Garden or The Staples Center.

Successful Students 9

Successful Students 9
9. …don’t cram for exams. Successful students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practice it.
There is one thing that study skills specialists agree on, it is that distributed study is better than massed, late-night, last-ditch efforts known as cramming. You’ll learn more, remember more, and earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour-a-night sessions for Friday’s exam than studying for four hours straight on Thursday night. Short, concentrated preparatory efforts are more efficient and rewarding than wasteful, inattentive, last moments marathons. Yet, so many students fail to learn this lesson and end up repeating it over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not too clever, huh?

When you cram, you are taking a shortcut, and shortcuts never produce any real worthwhile results. Also, when you take shortcuts, you feel rather rotten knowing that you could have done better but didn't  Shortcuts cut you short. You can’t plant watermelons seeds and harvest fresh watermelons the next day. It takes time. Cramming for the test or project and expecting to make a high score the next day is like planting watermelon seeds and expecting to harvest and eat fresh watermelon the next day. Plus cramming for the test or project doesn't help you academically, so why even do it. Plan ahead, prepare ahead. Give yourself plenty of days and weeks to prepare for upcoming accountability opportunities.

Successful Students 7-8

Successful Students
7-8
7. …understand that actions affect learning. Successful students know their personal behavior affect their feelings and emotions which in turn can affect learning.

If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to experience those feelings. Act like your bored, and you’ll become bored. Act like your disinterested, and you’ll become disinterested. So the next time you have trouble concentrating in the classroom, “act” like an interested person: lean forward, place your feet flat on the floor, maintain eye contact with the professor, nod occasionally, take notes, and ask questions. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professor may also get more excited and enthusiastic.
8. …talk about what they’re learning. Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words. Talking about something, with friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, it’s a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas not words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from short-term to long-term memory. You really don’t “know” material until you put it into words. So, next time you study, don’t do it silently. Talk about notes, problems, readings, etc. with friend, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, pretend you are teaching your peers. “Talk-learning” produces a whole host of memory traces that results in more learning.

Student Success Statement #32

Student Success Statement
“The time is always right to do what is right.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Reflection:
I think that this statement is trying to say that there will always be time to choose the right and when you choose whatever your choice is it will be the right one. Choosing the right can never be a wrong choice because whatever the right choice is it is from the heart. For example, if you have to choose between studying for a test or going out with your friends the right thing to do would be to stay and study for your test.

Student Success Statement #29

Student Success Statement
"There is no instinct like that of the heart."
-Byron

Reflection:
I think that this statement is trying to say that you should always follow your heart because your heart will know when to choose the right. the best thing to always do is to choose the right because that will make your life super easier and you will never have to regret anything. Also never choose the wrong!
